5 Common Mistakes New Reborn Doll Owners Make (and How to Avoid Them)

Starting your journey with reborn dolls is exciting. But we see the same mistakes over and over, and most of them can permanently damage your baby if you're not careful. Here are the five most common mistakes new owners make and exactly how to avoid them.

1. Dressing your doll in dark or bleeding clothing

This is by far the most common and most devastating mistake. Dark fabrics (especially new denim, navy, red and black) contain excess dye that leaches into silicone and vinyl. The result is permanent stains that cannot be removed.

How to avoid it: Always wash new clothes twice before putting them on your doll. Use a color-catcher sheet in the first wash: you'll be surprised how much dye comes out. As a rule of thumb, line dark outfits with a white cotton layer underneath. When in doubt, do the tissue test: rub a damp white tissue over the fabric. If it transfers color, it isn't safe for your doll's skin.

2. Using the wrong cleaning products

Baby wipes, alcohol-based cleaners, antibacterial sprays and even some "gentle" household cleaners contain chemicals that break down silicone and strip paint. A single alcohol wipe used "just this once" can permanently dull a painted detail.

How to avoid it: Stick to warm water with a few drops of mild, fragrance-free dish soap. Use your fingertips, not cloths or wipes. For quick dusting, a soft makeup brush is all you need.

3. Leaving your doll in direct sunlight

UV radiation makes silicone yellow and fades painted details over time. Displaying your doll on a sunny windowsill may look beautiful in photos, but it's slowly damaging her.

How to avoid it: Display your doll in a shaded area, away from direct windows. If you want to display her near natural light, use UV-filtering glass or keep her behind curtains. Think "museum conditions": soft, indirect light.

4. Not powdering regularly

Silicone is naturally tacky. Without regular powdering, it attracts dust, lint and pet hair like a magnet. Over time, this buildup can become embedded in the surface and be difficult to remove.

How to avoid it: Make powdering a weekly habit. Use a clean, soft makeup brush with a high-quality matting powder made for silicone. Dust lightly and evenly, then brush off the excess. Never use talcum, scented baby powder or cornstarch: they can cause moisture issues or attract insects.

5. Handling with dirty or greasy hands

Lotion, hand sanitizer, cooking oils, perfume: they all leave residue on your hands that transfers to the silicone surface. Over time, these chemicals can cause tackiness, discoloration or paint breakdown.

How to avoid it: Get into the habit of washing and drying your hands thoroughly before picking up your doll. It takes five seconds and makes an enormous difference in the longevity of your baby's finish.
